Keep your money safe: be aware of malware and phishing

Dear e-Banking customers, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited Jakarta Branch (the Bank) is committed to providing you with a high-quality and safe internet banking and mobile banking services. To ensure that your account funds are more secure and online transactions are more reliable, please pay attention to the possibility of abuse or fraud through e-Banking, in which among others are Malicious Software (Malware) and Phishing. Here are some tips that you can follow to avoid Malware and Phishing.

1. Malware

Malicious software (malware) is a technique of mobile/internet banking account break-ins by using viruses, spyware, and other unwanted applications that are installed on your computer or mobile devices without your consent. The things you can do to minimize the danger of malware among others:

  • Use a personal computer and a trusted network to access internet banking services. Avoid using public computers, for example in the internet cafe, and / or with unreliable network, e.g. Wi-Fi access point provided by the cafe or outlets in the shopping center.
  • Equip the personal computer and mobile phone with the trusted anti-virus.
  • Avoid access to and/or downloading application or software or package especially Android Package Kit (“APK”) files from unknown sources (beware of package receipt scams, digital invitation scams, etc.) and files from untrusted web addresses.
  • Be alert of unreasonable requests for access to personal information, for example, a request to enter the token code via a pop-up screen.
  • Immediately follow-up by contacting the call center if there is an official notification from the bank about any suspicious activity on your account that you never do so.

2. Phishing

Phishing is the act of asking (fishing) victims to reveal personal data or financial data from victims via email, text, website, or other electronic communication by pretending to be from a trustworthy source like a bank, official institution, or government. The message or site looks real and will often ask you to enter your confidential personal data such as user ID, Password/PIN, OTP code, CCV code or other bank account information.

The things you can do to minimize the danger of Phishing, among others are:

  • As phishing might be disguised as a trusted party, please check the sender's information carefully. If any doubt on the content of the email, you can call the party directly for verification through their official contact information.
  • Keep in mind that the Bank will never ask for any confidential personal data such as User ID, Password/PIN,  OTP code and CVV code.
  • Be considerate when clicking any links or downloading attachment file unless you have confirmed the sender’s identity, as they may contain viruses / malware that can steal personal data.
  • Confirm to the Bank through an official call center if there is a suspicious request.
  • Never enter your user ID and password on an unofficially web page that opens automatically (pop up) or from a link. Please visit the Bank’s official website (https://www.bankofchina.co.id) directly to access the internet banking service.
